President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Brussels to take part in the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunization, reaffirming his strong advocacy for equitable vaccine access and global health security.
The visit was confirmed in a statement released by the Office of the President and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications.
President Mahama is attending the high-level summit co-hosted by the European Union, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi). The event aims to mobilise resources and political will to fund Gavi’s 2026–2030 strategic plan, which targets the immunisation of 500 million additional children, the prevention of over 8 million deaths, and protection against 150 potential disease outbreaks.

“As we’ve seen in Ghana and across Africa, vaccines save lives and protect futures. A fully funded Gavi is not just a health imperative—it is an economic and moral one,” President Mahama said ahead of the summit.
Reaffirming Longstanding Support for Gavi
President Mahama has been a vocal supporter of Gavi’s mission since his presidency in 2013, advocating for universal access to life-saving vaccines, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. His continued involvement underscores Africa’s leadership in global health diplomacy.
Gavi’s efforts since its founding in 2000 have resulted in:
- Vaccination of over 1 billion children
- Prevention of 18.8 million deaths
- Generation of more than $250 billion in economic benefits
The 2025 summit in Brussels is being hailed as a pivotal opportunity to rally both traditional donors and emerging partners around a common goal of vaccine equity. It also highlights Gavi’s collaborative model, which unites governments, multilateral institutions, civil society, communities, and the private sector.
High-Level Bilateral Engagements
While in Brussels, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral talks with key global figures, including the President of the EU Council of Ministers and Bill Gates, to further galvanise international commitment to vaccine financing and delivery.
Gavi’s new strategy is projected to deliver over $100 billion in global economic benefits, reinforcing the view that vaccine access is not only a public health priority but a foundation for long-term global development.
