COVID-19: “We’ve Started The Process Of Securing Vaccines Locally To Ensure Rapid Deployment Should The Need Arise,” – Health Minister

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that the government is actively working to acquire COVID-19 vaccines locally in response to a recent increase in cases and the possibility of a future resurgence.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Akandoh confirmed a spike in COVID-19 infections, predominantly traced to the University of Ghana campus and largely driven by the Omicron variant. Of 316 suspected cases, 107 have so far been confirmed.

He assured the public that there have been no hospital admissions or fatalities linked to the new infections.

Mr. Akandoh explained that although COVID-19 vaccines are no longer part of Ghana’s routine immunization programme—consistent with global policy—they remain a vital tool in limiting the spread of the virus and preventing serious illness and death.

“As part of our preparedness strategy, we’ve started the process of securing vaccines locally to ensure rapid deployment should the need arise,” he stated.

The Minister emphasized the government’s dedication to protecting high-risk groups, especially the elderly and people with underlying health conditions who are more vulnerable to severe outcomes from the virus.

“Our approach continues to prioritize the health of vulnerable populations,” he added.

He also highlighted that effective COVID-19 treatments are still available, citing Paxlovid, an antiviral medication administered twice daily for five days, as the recommended option for individuals with mild to moderate symptoms who also suffer from conditions like diabetes or hypertension.

“Most people recover at home with supportive care, but our healthcare facilities remain fully equipped to handle severe cases with oxygen support and comprehensive clinical management,” Mr. Akandoh said.

He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to public health and emphasized the need for national preparedness, particularly for those at higher risk of complications.
