The Electoral Commission (EC) has categorically refuted allegations of political influence in its decision to rerun the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency.
The clarification comes in the wake of mounting accusations that the Commission is favoring the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the rerun scheduled for Thursday, July 11.
Despite the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to boycott the election, describing it as “unjust,” the party’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, has chosen to defy the directive and participate in the rerun.
Attempts by the party to halt the exercise through legal and administrative means have been unsuccessful.
Addressing journalists in Accra on Thursday, July 10, Dr. Bossman Asare, the EC’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, reaffirmed the Commission’s independence and credibility.
“We state categorically that Ghana’s electoral management body is an independent body and will not be influenced by any institution or any person. Our track record speaks for itself,” he emphasized.
The rerun was necessitated by disputes over the initial results in some polling stations, prompting the EC to organize fresh voting to ensure the integrity and transparency of the electoral process. The EC remains resolute in its commitment to upholding the principles of fairness and impartiality, underscoring its dedication to democratic values.
In a bid to ensure representation in Parliament, the EC has reiterated the importance of the rerun, stressing that it is crucial to the democratic process.
