Residents Appeal to President Mahama Over Demolitions at Tema, Sakumono Ramsar Sites

A group of residents whose homes are situated on portions of the Tema and Sakumono Ramsar sites have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the ongoing demolitions being carried out in the area.

The residents argue that their lands were legally acquired, some through transactions with the Forestry Commission, and insist they have taken steps to protect the environment, not destroy it.

Speaking on Citi Fm’s Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, August 5, one of the affected residents, Jerry Narhyumu, emphasized their willingness to engage with authorities to find a peaceful resolution.

“We have engaged all this while with Henry Quartey, and we have engaged with all the authorities. We are willing to engage. Some of us have dredged the stream in front of our properties. We have rather protected the stream,” he said.

Narhyumu further stated that many residents have lived in the area since 2019 without experiencing flooding or major ecological disruption. He urged the current NDC administration to continue the engagement process started under the previous government.

“As we know, government is a continuum, so if the NPP government is gone and the NDC government has come, all we expect from them is to continue the engagement so that we can regularise the land,” he added.
