Hugo Ekitike Reacts After Red Card in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup Win Over Southampton

Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike has broken his silence following his controversial red card during the Reds’ 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Southampton at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The French striker came off the bench to score a dramatic 85th-minute winner, finishing off a brilliant team move that involved an unselfish assist from Federico Chiesa. However, moments later, Ekitike was sent off after removing his shirt in celebration—earning a second yellow card and leaving Liverpool with ten men for the final minutes.

The incident sparked frustration from head coach Arne Slot, who labelled the celebration as “stupid in every sense” during his post-match interview.

Ekitike Issues Apology

In response, Ekitike took to social media to express remorse over the dismissal and to thank supporters for their backing:

“I was so excited tonight to help the team achieve another victory here in our home for my first Carabao Cup match. The emotion got the better of me tonight.
My apologies to all the Red family. Thanks to the fans who always support us and to my teammates for securing this victory.”

Despite the win, the red card means Ekitike will miss Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace on Saturday, September 27—a blow for the Reds as they continue to integrate their new attacking signings.

Promising Signs, Unfortunate Ending

Both Ekitike and Alexander Isak, who also scored on the night, have shown promising signs since joining the club. But Ekitike’s dismissal has somewhat overshadowed what could have been a perfect night for the new-look Liverpool attack.

Coach Slot will now be forced to reshuffle his front line for the weekend clash, with Ekitike unavailable due to suspension.
