Players of Asante Kotoko SC have been promised a special bonus should they advance to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup, according to the club’s Director of Communications, Sarfo Duku.

The Porcupine Warriors carry a narrow advantage heading into the second leg, having secured a thrilling 4-3 first-leg victory over Nigeria’s Kwara United last Sunday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The team is set to travel to Nigeria on Friday, ahead of the decisive return fixture on Sunday, September 28, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta—a neutral venue serving as Kwara United’s temporary home due to CAF licensing requirements.

Motivation Beyond the Usual

Speaking to Nhyira FM, Sarfo Duku revealed that while winning bonuses are standard practice, qualification for the next round will attract an enhanced reward package.

“There is always a winning bonus even in the Ghana Premier League, but qualifying from the preliminary stage will add some appreciable amount of money,” Duku stated.

Eyes on Wydad Casablanca

Victory for Kotoko will set up a blockbuster tie against Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the next round—a major step toward the club’s ambitions of reasserting itself on the continental stage.

Sarfo Duku stressed that anything short of progress would be unacceptable.

“Asante Kotoko is ahead of Kwara United on any platform, so they should be able to account for them. The good news is that the match will be played on a neutral ground, so there is a significant advantage for us,” he said.

“I assure all Kotoko fans that on Sunday after the game, Kotoko will be eligible for the next stage.”

All to Play For

With a one-goal advantage and the away leg on neutral soil, Kotoko will be hoping to leverage their experience and firepower to complete the job in Nigeria.

The team’s performance in this year’s continental competition is also seen as a litmus test for new coach Abdul Gazale, who is aiming to lead the Kumasi-based club back to continental glory.
