The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has given all unlicensed mortuaries and funeral homes across the country one week to regularise their operations or face closure.
In a statement dated October 22, 2025, MoFFA reminded operators that, under Part Two of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), it is mandated to license, control, and regulate all facilities involved in the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains.
The Agency expressed concern that several facilities continue to operate illegally, contrary to Section 55 of Act 829, which makes it an offence to run a mortuary or funeral establishment without proper registration or licensing. Offenders, according to the law, risk fines, suspension, or permanent closure.
“All operators of facilities and practitioners are by this notice advised to take steps to regularise their operations or risk closure of their facilities,” the statement cautioned.
MoFFA urged affected operators to visit its offices at the former Ministry of Health Main Building, Room 22, or contact the agency through its official phone lines or website — www.moffa.gov.gh — for assistance.
The Agency reaffirmed its commitment to upholding public health standards and dignity in death, in line with its motto: “Protecting the Living; Dignifying the Dead.”
