Finance Minister Warns Against Pricing in US Dollars, Urges Support for Cedi

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has cautioned businesses and the general public against trading or pricing goods and services in foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar, stressing that the Ghana cedi remains the country’s only legal tender.

Speaking at the official launch of the Cedi@60 celebration in Accra, Dr. Forson urged Ghanaians to demonstrate patriotism by preserving the value and sanctity of the national currency.

“As citizens, we have a role to play; we must maintain the sanctity of the cedi as a legal tender by preserving it with dignity and protecting it jealously,” he said. “We must eschew the act that seeks to undermine the cedi, particularly the pricing of goods and services in foreign currency, the US dollar. Let me use this opportunity to stress that as Ghanaians, the Ghana cedi remains the only legal tender.”

The minister warned that the increasing trend of quoting prices in US dollars weakens the cedi and undermines the broader economy.

He urged Ghanaians to take pride in using the cedi, describing it as a symbol of national identity and economic independence.

“The US dollar is not our currency; the cedi is our only currency,” Dr. Forson stressed. “The continuous pricing of goods and services in the US dollar will only hurt us. Let’s stop it, and let’s stop it now. The cedi is the only currency we have — let’s protect it, trade with it, and defend it with all vim within us. Let’s talk about the cedi with pride and not as a burden.”

Dr. Forson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining currency stability, noting that ongoing measures are aimed at ensuring the cedi’s resilience.

“The government of Ghana remains committed, and we shall stay the course to ensure that the cedi remains stable and that recent gains are maintained,” he assured.

The Cedi@60 celebration, launched by the Bank of Ghana, marks six decades since the introduction of the cedi in 1965 as a symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty.
