The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has suspended its recruitment exercise following a devastating stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium, which claimed six lives and left dozens injured.
The incident occurred when thousands of hopeful applicants gathered at the stadium, leading to severe overcrowding and chaos at the entrance points.
President John Mahama visited the 37 Military Hospital to console the victims and their families, accompanied by Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson and other government officials.
The GAF has expressed regret over the incident and assured the public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilize the affected individuals.
The stampede occurred around 6:20 a.m. when an unexpected surge of applicants breached security protocols, rushing into the gates ahead of the scheduled screening. The GAF has confirmed that 28 individuals were affected, with six dead, five in intensive care, and 12 in critical condition.
The GAF has extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured. Authorities are reviewing safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in future recruitment exercises.
