Afenyo-Markin Warns of Deepening Disunity in NPP Minority Caucus, Says Internal Rift Weakening Oversight Role

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has issued a stern warning to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus, cautioning that growing internal divisions are crippling the group’s ability to hold the government accountable effectively.

Speaking during a tense caucus meeting on the 7th floor of Job 600 in Parliament on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Afenyo-Markin said the caucus was fast becoming its own worst enemy. He stressed that, despite the ruling side’s attempts to sideline them, it is the NPP MPs’ own disunity that poses the greatest threat to their mandate.

“We are not here by accident. We are here by choice,” he told the caucus. “But colleagues, I must speak plainly. That duty is suffering. Our people are suffering. And we are allowing our internal disagreements to become their burden.”

The Minority Leader lamented what he described as a worrying pattern of infighting, backbiting, and disorganisation, which he said plays directly into the hands of the Majority.

“The Majority sits across from us with one agenda — to suppress our views, to silence our expression, to render us irrelevant. And what are we doing? We are doing their work for them,” he said. “We bicker. We backbite. We whisper in corridors instead of roaring in this chamber.”

Calls for Unity Ahead of 2028 Political Contest

Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that internal differences are inevitable in a democratic party, especially as MPs prepare to back various candidates ahead of the 2028 elections. However, he warned that such disagreements must never be allowed to undermine the caucus’s collective responsibility.

“Yes, we will disagree on how to achieve our goals. Yes, NPP MPs will support different candidates for 2028. Yes, we will have competing visions,” he said. “But we must never allow our internal disagreements to make the people of Ghana the collateral damage of our divisions.”

He urged members to recommit to discipline, teamwork, and a unified posture in Parliament, stressing that the Minority’s strength lies in its cohesion.

Accuses Government of Mismanagement

Afenyo-Markin also used the platform to criticize the government, accusing it of economic mismanagement, weaponizing state institutions, and targeting political opponents. He argued that the Minority cannot mount a credible challenge to the government’s alleged excesses while remaining fractured.

“Right now, as we sit divided, the government is running riot,” he said. “They are mismanaging our economy. They are weaponising state institutions. They are persecuting our compatriots. But belief without action is betrayal.”

Internal Tensions Come to the Surface

The Minority Leader’s remarks come amid growing reports of discontent within the NPP parliamentary ranks, with some MPs expressing frustration about strategy, leadership style, and the party’s broader posture in Parliament.

Political analysts say the speech may signal an attempt by Afenyo-Markin to regain control of a caucus increasingly divided by personal rivalries and early political maneuvering ahead of the next election cycle.

Path Forward

Afenyo-Markin concluded his address with a plea for renewed commitment to the party’s core values and the national interest, urging his colleagues to “put Ghana first.”

Whether the call will calm tensions or spark further internal debate remains to be seen.
