Government Completes Recruitment of 13,500 Nurses and Midwives — Health Minister

Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced the completion of the recruitment of 13,500 nurses and midwives, describing it as a major step toward stabilising Ghana’s health workforce and strengthening frontline service delivery.

Speaking at the 19th Biennial Conference of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in Tamale on Wednesday, November 19, the Minister revealed that all newly engaged personnel who experienced delays in receiving their salaries will be paid by the end of the month.

Mr. Akandoh explained that the mass recruitment forms part of government’s broader strategy to enhance primary healthcare delivery under both the Free Primary Healthcare and Mahama Cares programmes — initiatives in which nurses and midwives play a critical role.

“In 2025, the Mahama administration successfully concluded the recruitment process initiated by the previous government by facilitating the enrollment of 13,500 nurses and midwives into the government’s payroll,” he said.

“I am pleased to announce that by the end of this month, all individuals whose salary processes experienced a delay will receive their first payment.”

The Health Minister also highlighted the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of health workers, confirming that the negotiated Conditions of Service for nurses and midwives are under strong consideration for inclusion in the 2026 Budget.

“The government has strongly considered the negotiated conditions of service for implementation in the 2026 Budget. This is a clear demonstration of government commitment to continuity, fairness, and the welfare of nurses and midwives,” he stated.

Mr. Akandoh called for deeper collaboration between the Ministry of Health, labour institutions, and the GRNMA to address key challenges including deployment, specialist training, and long-term workforce stability. He emphasised that strong partnerships are essential to advancing quality healthcare delivery across the country.
