EC Staff Petitions President Mahama for Removal of Jean Mensa and Deputies

A staff member of the Electoral Commission (EC), Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to initiate the removal of the Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensa, along with her two deputies—Dr. Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey—over allegations of misconduct he believes threaten the credibility of Ghana’s electoral system.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 24, Mr. Adumadzie confirmed that the petition was submitted in line with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the process for removing heads of independent constitutional bodies. He declined to disclose the full details of the petition, citing legal requirements, but revealed that it is based on 12 counts of stated misbehaviour.

The allegations include cronyism, abuse of office, and gross incompetence. According to Mr. Adumadzie, the conduct of the three senior EC officials has significantly eroded public trust in the Commission and poses a serious threat to the integrity and independence of Ghana’s electoral processes.

He stated that his petition is motivated solely by a desire to protect the Constitution and promote accountability in governance. The dignity and credibility of the Electoral Commission, he noted, are essential to safeguarding Ghana’s democratic foundations.

Mr. Adumadzie also urged President Mahama to honour his constitutional duty by referring the petition to the Chief Justice for a determination on whether a prima facie case exists, as required under Article 146 procedures.
