Private Legal Practitioner Martin Kpebu Detained at OSP, Interrogation Over Corruption Claims Stalled

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu was detained by officers at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Wednesday, December 3, preventing investigators from questioning him over corruption allegations he has levelled against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

Kpebu, who had arrived at the OSP premises for a scheduled engagement with officials, reportedly clashed with police officers at the entrance. He was taken into custody before any interrogation could begin. According to sources, the Special Prosecutor could not proceed with the session while Kpebu remained in police custody.

He was later granted bail, which required a landed property in his name as surety. However, when his lawyer returned to complete the process, Kpebu was reportedly nowhere to be found, raising further questions about the circumstances of his detention and release.

Wednesday’s incident adds to escalating tensions between Kpebu and the OSP. The outspoken lawyer has repeatedly criticised the office’s investigative methods, accusing the Special Prosecutor of procedural lapses and of delegating sensitive inquiries to junior officers who report directly to Mr. Agyebeng.

Addressing journalists before a previous appearance at the OSP last week, Kpebu insisted that he would only cooperate with investigators if the committee handling his matter was independently constituted. He argued that the current arrangement undermines the fairness and integrity of the process.

He also cited past concerns regarding the OSP’s investigation of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, claiming that the office mishandled key procedural steps in that matter as well.

The OSP has yet to issue an official statement on Kpebu’s detention. Sources indicate he may be released later this evening.
