The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region following a surge in coups and attempted military mutinies that continue to threaten political stability.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th Session of the Mediation and Security Council, held at the ministerial level in Abuja.
Addressing delegates, Touray warned that the recent developments highlight the “urgent need to reflect on the future of our democracy and to strengthen the security of our community.” He emphasized that the wave of unconstitutional political disruptions poses a danger to the region’s democratic foundations.
The declaration signals heightened concern among West African leaders as multiple countries struggle with political unrest, governance challenges, and mounting threats to democratic order.
