Turmoil Emanates from Cameroon Football Federation Ahead of Africa Cup of Nations

A state of institutional disarray has engulfed the Cameroonian national football team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This crisis follows the team’s failure to qualify for the recent FIFA World Cup and threatens to destabilize their preparations for the AFCON 2025.

The situation has reached a Level were the team currently operating under the authority of two separate head coaches. Each coach has released a conflicting squad list for the upcoming competition.

The controversy stems from sequence of events initiated by Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).

Eto’o dismissed Belgian coach Marc Brys approximately ten days ago. However, Brys has publicly stated he never received official notification of his termination and has therefore proceeded with his duties, including publishing his selected squad for AFCON.

Concurrently, President Eto’o appointed David Pagou, to assume control of the national team.

Pagou has since issued his own squad list, creating a clear administrative standoff.

Further escalating the controversy, President Eto’o is facing serious public allegations regarding the squad selection. Critics and observers have accused him of intervening to remove veteran striker and team captain, Vincent Aboubakar, from the provisional list. The allegation suggests this decision is motivated by a desire to protect Eto’o’s own legacy as Cameroon’s all-time top scorer. Aboubakar, 33, has scored 45 international goals, while Eto’o’s record stands at 56.

This series of events, a dual coach impasse, conflicting squad declarations, and allegations of executive power in player selection presents a challenge to the team’s stability and focus ahead of a major tournament.

The football community awaits a swift and definitive resolution from the governing bodies involved.
