The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has given its unanimous backing to former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama as the sole West African candidate for the Chairpersonship of the African Union (AU) when the rotating position returns to the region in 2027.
The endorsement was made during the Council’s 95th Ordinary Session, held in Abuja. It will be submitted to the Authority of Heads of State and Government for formal adoption on Sunday, 14 December 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, December 12, 2025, ECOWAS expressed appreciation to all member states for their unanimous support, citing Ghana’s longstanding contributions to sub-regional stability, diplomacy, and development.
Commitment to a Unified Regional Front
The statement reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to presenting a united front in international organisations, particularly the African Union, stating:
“Determined to work in a concerted manner to support the candidates of ECOWAS Member States or their nationals in international organizations, including the African Union, to ensure that the interests of ECOWAS continue to be promoted and protected.
Desiring to adopt a common position for effective support and voting in favour of the election of the Republic of Ghana to the Chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.”
According to the Council, backing Mahama aligns with ECOWAS’ broader objective of strengthening regional influence within continental and global institutions. The endorsement underscores an ongoing effort to ensure that West Africa’s strategic interests are well represented at the highest levels of decision-making.
Next Steps
The Council has urged the Authority of Heads of State and Government, ECOWAS’ highest decision-making body, to formally adopt the declaration endorsing Mahama’s candidacy when it convenes on December 14.
If approved, Mahama will become the official ECOWAS nominee, paving the way for the region to rally behind his bid when the AU chairmanship rotates to West Africa in 2027.
