Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that the United States government has assured Ghana it will not impede ongoing efforts to extradite former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.
According to Mr Ablakwa, the assurance was given as part of strengthened bilateral cooperation between Ghana and the United States, particularly in the areas of security and law enforcement.

Ken Ofori-Atta was detained in the United States in January 2026 following a formal extradition request by the Government of Ghana in connection with corruption and procurement-related charges filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). He is currently in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as legal proceedings continue to assess his immigration status and the extradition request.
Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, who was convicted in Ghana in 2024 for causing financial loss to the state, has also been the subject of sustained extradition efforts by Ghanaian authorities.
The Attorney General has indicated that the formal extradition request submitted to the US Department of Justice in mid-2024 remains under review, with authorities awaiting the completion of the required legal and procedural processes.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting in Accra with the Acting US Ambassador to Ghana, Rolf Olson, and his delegation, Mr Ablakwa said the United States had reaffirmed its commitment to cooperation, while respecting judicial processes.
“Ghana and the United States applauded our improved security and law enforcement cooperation, which led to the extradition of nine suspects from Ghana to the United States in 2025, as well as ongoing efforts to return two Ghanaians of high interest from the US to Ghana,” he stated.

He added that the US government had made it clear that it would not stand in the way of Ghana’s efforts to secure the extradition of Mr Ofori-Atta and Ms Tamakloe Attionu.
“The United States Government has assured that, without prejudice to judicial processes, it will not obstruct Ghana with respect to the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta and Sedina Tamakloe Attionu,” Mr Ablakwa said.
The assurance is expected to bolster confidence in Ghana–US legal and judicial cooperation as both extradition cases proceed through their respective legal frameworks.
