The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has extended its congratulations to referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea for his outstanding achievements and for being a fine example of Ghanaian football officiating across Africa.
Laryea’s recent honour as the 2025 SWAG Referee of the Year at the Association’s 50th awards ceremony highlights a career built on merit and strong support. His success was prominently displayed at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite Ghana’s national team not qualifying for the tournament, Laryea stood out as the sole Ghanaian among the 72 match officials chosen for AFCON 2025. His role went beyond that of a referee, as he also served as a proud ambassador for the country.

A significant moment in his career came when he was appointed to officiate the high-stakes semi-final match between host nation Morocco and Nigeria. This appointment by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) was a clear mark of trust in his ability and fairness. Laryea managed the intense match with authority and calm, justifying the confidence placed in him.
His experience is not limited to one tournament. Laryea’s record includes officiating at multiple Africa Cup of Nations, the CAF Women’s Champions League, the African Nations Championship (CHAN), and major local competitions.
SWAG notes that these individual successes are supported by wider reforms within Ghanaian football. The association commended the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for its dedicated efforts to improve refereeing standards and rebuild trust in officiating, following a difficult period for the sport in Ghana.
SWAG expressed hope that this positive trend will continue and grow stronger. The aim is to see more Ghanaian referees rise to officiate at major CAF and FIFA tournaments, ensuring Ghana’s referees continue to earn respect throughout Africa and the world.
