Police Retrieve Suspected Cannabis Worth Over GH₵1.4 Million in Oti Region

Police in the Oti Region have retrieved a large quantity of suspected cannabis valued at more than GH₵1.4 million from a truck intercepted late last year.

According to a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor of the Public Affairs Unit, the Volvo truck with registration number GC 3522-09 was stopped on December 29, 2025, at the Bonakye checkpoint while heading towards Passa, following intelligence that it was transporting illegal goods.

Police said the driver and one other occupant fled the scene immediately after the vehicle was stopped, abandoning the truck with the ignition key still in it.

Subsequent investigations led officers to secure a court order to open the vehicle. On February 24, the Jasikan Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Lambert Y. Kerieba, granted authorisation for the truck to be opened.

The exercise was carried out at Kwanta in the presence of representatives from the Police, Military, National Intelligence Bureau, Defence Intelligence, Ghana National Fire Service, the Narcotics Control Commission in Jasikan, as well as members of the media.

Upon opening the truck, officers initially discovered 320 cartons of bottled mineral water. However, concealed beneath the cartons were 91 bales of suspected cannabis.

Police disclosed that the 91 bales contained a total of 7,173 slabs of the suspected substance, with an estimated street value exceeding GH₵1.4 million.

The seized items have been retained as investigations continue to identify and apprehend the suspects involved.

The Police have reiterated their commitment to combating the trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs and urged members of the public to volunteer credible information to support crime prevention and detection efforts.
