Parkinson’s Often Mistaken for Stroke, Neurologist Dr. Vida Obese Calls for NHIS Coverage

Neurologist Dr. Vida Obese says Parkinson’s disease is frequently confused with stroke because it often starts on one side of the body; however, the two conditions differ significantly in onset and progression.

Speaking at a recent health forum, Dr. Obese explained that, unlike a stroke—which occurs suddenly and affects parts of the body depending on the area of the brain damaged—Parkinson’s disease is gradual and progressive.

“There is no single major cause of Parkinson’s disease,” she said. Research shows that about 26% of cases are linked to genetics, although she noted that the genetic markers identified globally are not common in the African population. “There are many genetic gaps, which makes the disease harder to understand here.”

On diagnosis, Dr. Obese said patients should undergo a physical examination by a doctor. Brain imaging is sometimes used—not to confirm Parkinson’s—but to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms.

She stressed that management goes beyond medication. “Exercise is a cornerstone of managing Parkinson’s,” she said, adding that care must involve a team of health professionals, not just doctors.

Dr. Obese described treatment costs as a heavy burden on patients and families and appealed to the government to include Parkinson’s disease under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

She urged patients to avoid herbal remedies, warning that the disease can interact negatively with other medicines. “Parkinson’s can be managed effectively with proper medication. Visit the hospital for care,” she said.

The health forum also featured teachers from various zones, who shared how their pupils benefit from play and social interaction, as well as how fellow teachers support them in organizing activities for children.
