New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has made it clear he is not rebuilding Ghana’s national team from the ground up, but rather building on the solid foundation left by his predecessor, Otto Addo.
Speaking at his official unveiling, Queiroz acknowledged Addo’s historic contribution to Ghanaian football and emphasized the need for continuity and improvement rather than drastic changes.
Addo etched his name into the nation’s football history by becoming the first coach to guide the Black Stars to two separate FIFA World Cup qualifications—for 2022 FIFA World Cup and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Under his leadership, Ghana also went unbeaten during the 2026 qualifiers, topping Group I with 25 points, an achievement that now serves as a strong platform for the new coach.

Queiroz was quick to recognize that success.
“We must improve the legacy of the previous coach, Otto Addo. I thank him very much for qualifying Ghana for the World Cup; that is our goal,” he said.
Rather than making sweeping changes, the Portuguese tactician stressed that his approach will be guided by careful analysis, continuity, and calculated evolution.
“We are studying and analyzing everything related to the past of the team in order to improve.”
Honest assessment underway
Queiroz revealed that a thorough and honest evaluation of the current squad is already in progress, with decisions to be based strictly on performance and merit.
“We are making an honest assessment of where we stand, the value of the players, the value of the team.”
He emphasized that understanding the true level of the squad is essential before making any major decisions ahead of the global tournament.

“Right players, right decisions”
With limited time before the World Cup, Queiroz underscored the importance of precision in selection and strategy.
“There is a difference between a good decision and a bad decision in football… we must bring the right players to build the right team.”
As Ghana prepares for the 2026 World Cup, every decision from squad selection to tactical setup—will be crucial in determining how far the Black Stars can go.
