Engineers Working 24/7 to Restore Power After Akosombo Substation Fire – Jinapor

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured that engineers are working around the clock to restore power following a fire outbreak at a Ghana Grid Company Limited substation in Akosombo.

The incident, triggered by an explosion on Thursday, April 23, 2026, caused significant damage to the facility, disrupting power transmission across parts of the country.

After inspecting the site, the Minister described the extent of destruction as serious, noting that restoration work is already underway alongside investigations into the cause of the fire.

Engineers from GRIDCo and the Volta River Authority are currently collaborating to isolate the affected control station and reroute electricity through alternative systems.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, April 24, Jinapor revealed that about 1,000 megawatts of power scheduled for transmission had been affected by the outage.

“The immediate focus is restoration of power. Engineers have been working around the clock. The Chief Executives of GRIDCo and VRA spent a chunk of their time here on Thursday,” he said.

He added that efforts are being made to restore at least one unit promptly.

“They are working to isolate the control station and feed power through an alternative arrangement. They plan to bring one unit back on today.”

According to him, engineers will continue operations on a 24-hour shift system to accelerate recovery.

“Work will continue in shifts, 24/7, so that by the close of day one, the unit can be restored. Once successful, it will pave the way for the restoration of the remaining units.”

The Minister emphasized that while restoring power remains the top priority, investigations into the cause of the explosion and fire will proceed without compromise.

He also indicated that progress is being made on transformer replacement and system upgrades, following recent interventions aimed at strengthening Ghana’s power distribution network.
