The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that the Bogoso–Prestea road project has been reassigned to a new contractor following persistent delays and unsatisfactory performance by the previous contractor, Black Oak.
Addressing the Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Development on Wednesday, June 10, Mr. Agbodza said several efforts by the Ministry and the Ghana Highways Authority to get the contractor to speed up work failed to produce the desired results.
He described the condition of the 23-kilometre stretch as a major concern for residents and traditional authorities, who have repeatedly expressed frustration over the deteriorating state of the road and the slow pace of construction.
According to the minister, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Highways Authority held numerous engagements with the contractor in an attempt to improve progress on the project, but performance continued to fall short of expectations.
“So when we went to the site, I asked him to step aside. I asked the contractor to leave the site, and as I speak to you, a new contractor has mobilised to do the work,” Mr. Agbodza told the committee.
He explained that the decision to replace the contractor was taken to avoid further setbacks and ensure the timely completion of the project, which is considered critical to improving transportation and connectivity in the area.
Mr. Agbodza added that the reassignment followed growing concerns over the contractor’s inability to meet agreed targets, with progress on the project remaining well below acceptable standards.
