Suspect Arrested Over Murder of UCC Student Found Dead at Hutchland Beach

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), whose body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.

The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was apprehended on Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following intelligence-led operations.

According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the university’s hostel enclave.

Investigators stated that Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher and also works as a driver, later transported Innocentia to Hutchland Beach, where she was allegedly last seen alive.

The arrest follows the discovery of the student’s body at the beach several days later under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Police sources indicated that one of the deceased’s roommates told investigators that Innocentia had informed her she was going out to meet an acquaintance on the day she disappeared. She reportedly left her room in casual attire but never returned, raising alarm among friends and family members.

The Ghana Police Service says investigations into the case are ongoing and has assured the public that additional information will be released as inquiries continue.

The suspect is currently in police custody and assisting investigators with the case.
