Bawumia Restructures Personal Office, Appoints Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Chief of Staff

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has undertaken a major restructuring of his personal office, appointing former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and veteran politician Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Chief of Staff.

The appointment places Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu at the heart of Dr. Bawumia’s political operations and effectively makes him the second-most influential figure within the former Vice President’s emerging 2028 campaign structure.

A seven-term Member of Parliament for Suame, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is one of the longest-serving legislators in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, having served continuously from January 7, 1997, to January 6, 2025. He also held key leadership positions in Parliament, including Majority Leader and Minority Leader, earning widespread respect within the NPP and across the political divide.

The restructuring signals Dr. Bawumia’s efforts to reposition and strengthen the party machinery following the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general election. Political observers view the appointment as a strategic move aimed at leveraging Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s extensive legislative experience, deep grassroots connections, and institutional knowledge to support the party’s rebuilding process.

Beyond Ghana’s Parliament, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has also served on the international stage, including as Vice Chairman of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) and Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association International (CPA International).

As part of the reorganisation, Dr. Bawumia has made several other key appointments. Former MP Opare Ansah will serve as Director for Identifiable Activities, while former NPP National Chairman Peter Mac Manu has been named Director of Political Strategy. Former Bui Power Authority Chief Executive Fred Oware takes up the role of Political Advisor.

Former Information Minister Nana Akomea has been appointed Director of Communication and Branding, while Kojo Oppong Nkrumah will oversee Policy Coordination, assisted by Evans Hughes. Former Deputy Minister Anthony Abayifa Karbo will head Organization and Youth Inclusion, and Dr. Ekua Amoako has been named Spokesperson.
