ECOWAS Court Dismisses Former Chief Justice Torkonoo’s Challenge to Removal

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unanimously dismissed an application filed by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo seeking to challenge her removal from office as Chief Justice and Justice of Ghana’s Supreme Court.

The ruling, delivered on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, marks a significant legal setback for Justice Torkonoo, who had petitioned the regional court over the circumstances surrounding her removal.

Although the full judgment was not immediately available, the court’s unanimous decision effectively brings an end to her attempt to overturn the action through the ECOWAS judicial system.

Justice Torkonoo had sought redress from the regional court, contending that her rights were violated during the process that led to her removal from office.

The case attracted widespread public interest in Ghana, where concerns about judicial independence, due process and constitutional governance have dominated discussions following developments surrounding her departure from the judiciary’s highest office.

By dismissing the application, the ECOWAS Court leaves undisturbed the actions that resulted in her removal as Chief Justice and Supreme Court judge.

Legal analysts and observers are expected to closely examine the court’s reasoning once the full judgment is released. The detailed ruling is anticipated to provide clarity on the legal grounds upon which the application was dismissed and its implications for similar cases within the ECOWAS sub-region.

Further information is expected in the coming days as the court makes available the complete text of its decision.
