Government Rolls Out Support Measures for Atebubu Farmers Amid Marketing Challenges

The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has assured Parliament that the government is implementing measures to support maize and bean farmers in the Atebubu-Amantin District following the marketing difficulties that left many producers unable to sell their harvests last year.

Responding to questions on the floor of Parliament, the Deputy Minister said the Ministry has begun the nationwide distribution of agricultural inputs for the 2026 major cropping season as part of efforts to boost production and improve farmers’ productivity.

He added that the Ministry is collaborating with the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to strengthen grain marketing and provide farmers with a reliable market for their produce.

“The Ministry is working closely with the National Food Buffer Stock Company to strengthen the purchase and marketing of locally produced grain and has directed the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to intensify the purchase of surplus maize, rice and soya beans from farmers to help address the marketing difficulties and provide a ready market for their produce,” he told the House.

Mr. Dumelo, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, said the interventions are expected to stabilise grain prices, improve farmers’ incomes and strengthen the country’s food security.

The government’s response comes as it seeks to enhance domestic grain value chains, reduce post-harvest losses and improve market access for farmers, particularly during bumper harvest seasons when excess supply often leads to lower farmgate prices.
