President John Dramani Mahama has nominated three individuals for appointment to Ghana’s Supreme Court, pending parliamentary approval.
The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, together with legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Tony Forson.
Justice Amoako Asante previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice before rejoining Ghana’s judiciary.
Justice Sophia Bernasko-Essah is also the Anglican Diocese of Accra Chancellor and head of laity in the church.
The nominations were made in consultation with the Judicial Council, in line with the provisions of the Constitution.
If Parliament approves the appointments, the number of justices on the Supreme Court will increase from 18 to 21, further strengthening the country’s highest court.
The three nominees are expected to undergo parliamentary vetting before a final approval and swearing-in process.
