Dome-Kwabenya Residents Demonstrate Over 20-Year Road Neglect

Hundreds of residents from Dome-Kwabenya, Comet, Berekuso, Agyementi and Kitase have taken to the streets in a peaceful demonstration to demand the immediate rehabilitation and completion of the Dome-Kwabenya–Berekuso–Kitase Road.

The demonstration, organised by the Dome-Kwabenya–Kitase Road Stakeholders Committee, is aimed at drawing attention to the deteriorating condition of the road and the difficulties it continues to create for residents, commuters, transport operators and businesses in the affected communities.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, August 17, the demonstrators said they had exhausted all available channels of engagement with the authorities and were left with no option but to take to the streets to demand urgent action.

One of the demonstrators described the road as a major challenge for residents, particularly because of the difficulties it creates for movement within the area.

“This road is a huge problem for us. It makes our movement very difficult and disruptive. We are pleading with the government to work on our roads for us,” the demonstrator said.

Another protester said the road had remained neglected for about two decades, stressing that residents were demanding only peaceful action to address the situation.

“This is a peaceful demonstration for our roads to be fixed. The road has not been fixed in 20 years. We need our roads to be fixed.”

The residents also raised concerns about the health implications of the poor road conditions, particularly the dust generated by vehicles using the unpaved and deteriorated sections of the road.

According to the protesters, the situation has affected daily commuting, transportation and business activities while making movement increasingly difficult for people living and working in the affected communities.

They are therefore calling on the government and relevant authorities to prioritise the rehabilitation and completion of the Dome-Kwabenya–Berekuso–Kitase Road.

The residents say fixing the road would not only ease transportation challenges but also improve living conditions, support businesses and promote economic activity across the affected communities.
