National Cathedral Was a Good Idea Badly Executed – Ayariga

Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has described the National Cathedral project initiated by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a worthwhile idea that was poorly implemented.
Mr Ayariga made the remarks on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when he appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for his ministerial vetting.

The Bawku Central Member of Parliament said he had no objection to the establishment of a National Cathedral for Christians, noting that religion plays an important role in the lives of many Ghanaians.

He explained that places of worship, including churches, cathedrals and mosques, are important facilities that enable citizens to practise their faith.
However, Mr Ayariga said he had concerns about certain aspects of the National Cathedral project, particularly the location selected for the facility.

He maintained that although he supported the general idea of a national cathedral, the manner in which the project was implemented raised questions.
“I think it was a good idea that was badly executed. I personally had issues with the location,” he said.
Mr Ayariga’s comments came during his vetting as he seeks parliamentary approval to serve as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
