President John Dramani Mahama says ongoing infrastructure projects at the Accra International Airport are expected to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and make movement within the airport more convenient for passengers.
He made the remarks on Thursday during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex.
The development will comprise two hotels, more than 2,000 parking spaces and a pedestrian walkway connecting the new complex to the airport terminal. It will also include a shopping mall equipped with a food court, retail outlets and office spaces, alongside a sky lounge and sky observatory offering views of aircraft operations.
President Mahama commended the Minister of Transport and other stakeholders for initiating the projects, stressing that the government had not provided direct financial support for their implementation.
“The Government of Ghana has not given any of the two institutions one single cedi for these projects,” he said, while urging stakeholders to continue pursuing development without relying on government funding.
As construction gets underway, the President charged the contractor and consultants to maintain high standards, ensure value for money and complete the project within the agreed timeframe.
He called for strict compliance with project specifications, effective cost management and close supervision throughout the construction period.
President Mahama also directed the project managers to promptly identify and resolve challenges that could affect the quality or completion schedule.
He further stressed the need for regular communication with the public, particularly regarding construction milestones and temporary changes to traffic arrangements around the airport.
He said passengers should receive adequate advance notice of diversions and other disruptions caused by the construction, noting that effective communication would help reduce inconvenience and maintain public confidence in the project.
