Parliament has approved the nominations of Mahama Ayariga and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings to serve as Ministers for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and Environment, Science and Technology respectively.
The approvals followed their vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, as part of the constitutional process for examining presidential nominees before their appointment to ministerial positions.
Mr Ayariga, who previously served as Majority Leader and Chairman of Parliament’s Business Committee, was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to take charge of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
His nomination comes as part of changes to the government’s ministerial structure, with his extensive parliamentary and political experience expected to inform his work in the new portfolio.
Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, meanwhile, was nominated to lead the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology.
She will be responsible for key areas including environmental protection, scientific research, technological advancement and the development of policies to address environmental challenges.
Both nominees appeared before the Appointments Committee for questioning on their qualifications, experience, competence and suitability for the respective positions.
Following the vetting, the Committee recommended their approval, leading to the subsequent endorsement of their nominations by the House.
Their approval forms part of President Mahama’s ongoing adjustments to his ministerial team as the government seeks to advance its policy priorities in local governance, environmental sustainability, science and technology.
Mr Ayariga is expected to draw on his years of parliamentary and political experience in overseeing the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs portfolio.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, on the other hand, is expected to lead the government’s efforts in environmental protection while promoting scientific research, technological innovation and sustainable development.
