President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, ahead of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
The high-level meeting, scheduled for Sunday, August 30, will bring together African leaders to deliberate on ways to strengthen the continent’s capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts.
A major focus of the summit will be the consideration and adoption of a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan and Implementation Matrix designed to enhance Africa’s collective response to conflicts.
The leaders are also expected to evaluate the effectiveness of the African Peace and Security Architecture and the African Governance Architecture, with particular attention to coordination, implementation, responsiveness and sustainable financing.
The extraordinary session comes at a time when several regions across the continent continue to grapple with significant security threats.
These include the protracted conflicts in Sudan and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, persistent instability in the Sahel and Horn of Africa, as well as the ongoing insurgency in northern Mozambique.
The summit is being led by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, who serves as the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.
President Mahama and his fellow heads of state are expected to deliberate on practical strategies to strengthen peacebuilding initiatives and improve Africa’s collective ability to prevent conflicts and respond swiftly to emerging security challenges.
