IGP Summons Volta Police Commander Over Alleged Extortion on Aflao-Accra Route

Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has summoned the Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Akorli, over allegations of harassment, intimidation, unnecessary delays and extortion involving some police officers stationed along the Aflao–Accra highway.

The allegations concern several checkpoints along the busy route, including Tokor Barrier, Ativuta Toll Booth and the Weta–Afiadenyigba Junction Barrier, as well as other locations towards Sogakope.

Viral allegations trigger action

The issue gained public attention after a viral social media post alleged that some police personnel were demanding receipts for goods transported by local traders.

According to the allegations, traders who were unable to produce the required documentation were sometimes subjected to intimidation and allegedly forced to pay money before being allowed to continue their journeys.

The concerns have also attracted the attention of the Joint Association of Port Transport Unions (JAPTU), which has called on senior police authorities to intervene.

JAPTU has clarified that its main concern is not simply the presence of checkpoints but the alleged delays, intimidation and extortion reportedly experienced by traders travelling along the route.

Police begin investigation

Following his engagement with the IGP, DCOP Wisdom Akorli is expected to meet with all Divisional and District Police Commanders in the region on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, to discuss the allegations and determine appropriate action.

Police personnel operating at the affected locations have also been cautioned against any form of misconduct.

The Police Administration is further putting together an inspection team to visit the affected areas, identify officers who may have been involved in the alleged misconduct and investigate the claims.

The development comes as the Police Administration seeks to address concerns over the conduct of personnel at checkpoints and reassure traders and other road users that legitimate enforcement activities should not be accompanied by harassment or unlawful demands.
