Over 1,800 Online Fraud Cases Recorded in Ghana Within Seven Months

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has revealed that Ghana recorded 1,818 online fraud incidents between January and July 2026, accounting for about 47 percent of all cybersecurity incidents reported during the period.

According to CSA Director-General Divine Selase Agbeti, the national Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-GH) recorded a total of 3,876 cybersecurity incidents within the seven-month period.

Rising digital fraud concerns

Speaking at the launch of the 2026 National Cyber Security Awareness Month in Accra, Mr Agbeti warned that the rapid growth of digital financial services was also increasing exposure to cyber-enabled crimes.

He referenced the Bank of Ghana’s 2025 Fraud Report, which indicated that reported fraud cases involving banks, specialised deposit-taking institutions and payment service providers increased by 48 percent, rising from 16,733 cases in 2024 to 24,778 in 2025.

The report also showed that approximately GH¢101 million was at risk.

Mr Agbeti said the growing threat could undermine public confidence in digital financial services, stressing that cybersecurity must be treated as a major governance responsibility.

He urged financial institutions and businesses to strengthen their security systems and adopt measures such as multi-factor authentication, stronger identity management, regular vulnerability assessments and improved incident-response mechanisms.

AI making scams more sophisticated

The CSA Director-General further warned that criminals were increasingly using artificial intelligence to make online scams more convincing.

He cited emerging threats such as voice cloning, impersonation and sophisticated social engineering attacks.

He urged institutions not to wait until they suffered a cyberattack before taking preventive measures.

According to him, Ghana’s digital financial future will depend not only on how quickly the country embraces technological innovation but also on how securely those technologies are deployed.
