Korle Lagoon Slum Set for Major Redevelopment Under New Container Housing Plan

The government has announced plans to redevelop the slum area along the Korle Lagoon in Accra into high-rise container housing as part of efforts to improve sanitation, public health and living conditions in the area.

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, said the redevelopment would follow the military-led evacuation and clearing of the dumpsite.

The waste cleared from the area is expected to be transported to the Adepa Waste Management Centre at Nsawam.

Korle Lagoon to Be Dredged

The redevelopment plan will also include the dredging of the Korle Lagoon to tackle environmental and sanitation challenges affecting the area.

Speaking during a visit to the site, Mr Ayariga expressed confidence that the clearing exercise would receive broad public support, although he acknowledged that some residents could resist the move.

He said the number of people supporting the cleanup effort was far greater than those who might oppose it.

“Those of us who want to clear it in Accra here, we are far more than those who want to resist clearing the mess,” he said.

The proposed high-rise container housing is expected to form part of the broader redevelopment strategy aimed at transforming the area and addressing longstanding sanitation and environmental problems around the Korle Lagoon.
