Catholic Bishops Reject NPP Call for Chief Justice’s Resignation

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has rejected calls by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to resign over remarks attributed to him during visits to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF).

The NPP, in a statement issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026, demanded that the Chief Justice retract what the party described as partisan political comments or resign from office and formally join the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The party’s position followed comments attributed to Justice Baffoe-Bonnie during his engagements with the two institutions, which the NPP argued created concerns about his political neutrality as head of Ghana’s Judiciary.

Bishops Defend Chief Justice

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference, however, has disagreed with the demand for the Chief Justice’s resignation.

The Conference said the remarks made by Justice Baffoe-Bonnie did not reach the threshold that would justify calls for him to leave office.

The development has added another dimension to the debate over the conduct and political neutrality of the Chief Justice, with the NPP maintaining that the head of the Judiciary must remain above partisan politics.

The controversy comes at a time when questions about the independence and neutrality of state institutions continue to attract public attention.

While the NPP has criticised the Chief Justice’s comments, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference’s position indicates that it does not consider the remarks sufficient grounds for resignation.

The debate is expected to continue as stakeholders assess the appropriate limits of public comments by holders of high constitutional offices.
