NPP Calls for Chief Justice’s Resignation Over Partisan Comments and Selective Justice Claims

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded the immediate resignation of Ghana’s Chief Justice, accusing the head of the Judiciary of abandoning judicial neutrality after a viral video surfaced showing him allegedly making partisan political comments.

In a scathing statement issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party expressed “profound shock and disgust” over comments in which the Chief Justice reportedly suggested that the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration and its appointees were outperforming the previous NPP government.

“This is not the language of a Chief Justice. It is the language of a party propagandist, of a kind exclusively reserved for NDC communicators… If political commentary is his true vocation, he should resign forthwith and formally take up membership of the NDC,”

the NPP stated.

The opposition party argued that the remarks breach Articles 125 and 127 of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantee judicial independence. The NPP expressed severe concern over an alleged pledge by the Chief Justice to ensure the “agenda of the President succeeds,” questioning how the courts can remain impartial toward opposition figures currently facing prosecution under the government’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) anti-corruption drive.

To support its claims of selective justice, the NPP cited the rapid prosecution and incarceration of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), contrasting it with what it described as a sluggish handling of cases involving government allies.

The statement also called out the top judge for neglecting deteriorating judicial infrastructure across the country while actively attending political functions:

“With respect, My Lord, the leaking roofs are in your courts, not in the ministries,” the statement noted.

The NPP is demanding an immediate, unreserved retraction of the comments. Failing that, the party insists the Chief Justice must step down. It has also called on President John Dramani Mahama to publicly disavow any arrangement regarding the Chief Justice’s post-retirement future and announced plans for a major press conference to present the “full record” of the judge’s conduct.

Neither the Chief Justice nor the Judicial Service has issued a response to the allegations.
