Ghana Water Limited (GWL) will initiate controlled spillage at the Weija Dam starting Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after water levels reached 45.2 feet approaching the crucial 46-foot safety threshold.
In an official statement released Monday, GWL attributed the rising water levels to heavy upstream downpours and continuous rainfall across the Densu River catchment area and its tributaries. The company confirmed that the controlled release is a routine precautionary measure essential for maintaining the dam’s structural integrity.
Evacuation Advisory for Downstream Communities
GWL has directed residents living downstream to evacuate immediately ahead of the planned release. Communities at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey, and neighboring settlements. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, heed official evacuation instructions, and avoid high-risk areas.
The utility company has also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), local District Assemblies, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, and residents’ associations to coordinate evacuation procedures and take necessary safety precautions.
A Recurring Seasonal Risk
This marks the second major spillage event this year. GWL opened all spill gates in late May 2026 after water levels exceeded 48 feet, causing widespread flooding that displaced local residents and submerged homes. Controlled spilling is standard procedure during the rainy season whenever reservoir levels cross the 45-foot mark to prevent catastrophic structural failure.
GWL assured the public that it is continuously monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as needed, emphasizing that public cooperation remains vital for ensuring community safety.
