About 57,259 candidates who were not placed into Senior High Schools (SHSs) through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) will now have the opportunity to secure placement through the self-placement process.
The Ministry of Education announced that candidates who obtained grade 9 in English Language, Mathematics, or both subjects will be allowed to access the self-placement portal and choose from schools and programmes with available vacancies.
Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, disclosed this at a press briefing on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Breakdown of Unplaced Candidates
According to Dr Apaak, the 57,259 affected candidates comprise different categories.
– 3,372 candidates did not sit for the 2026 BECE.
– 35,382 candidates obtained grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics.
– 18,505 candidates obtained grade 9 in both subjects.
He said the decision was intended to ensure that young people were not unnecessarily excluded from second-cycle education because of the placement outcome.
“Accordingly, candidates who obtain a score of 9 in either English Language or Mathematics or in both subjects will be allowed to access the self-placement system and select from schools and programmes with available vacancies,” Dr Apaak said.
Self-Placement Portal Now Open
The Deputy Minister encouraged affected candidates and their parents to remain hopeful, explaining that the self-placement system provides another pathway for candidates who were not automatically matched with their preferred schools.
He said the portal was already live and would allow eligible candidates to select institutions and programmes where vacancies are available, including options for those who could not secure places in highly subscribed schools.
“The objective is to ensure that no young person is unnecessarily left behind whilst maintaining the integrity of the placement and examination systems,” he added.
Placement Resolution Centres Established
The Ministry has also established a Placement Resolution Centre in Accra, alongside regional placement resolution centres, to address genuine challenges arising from the placement process.
According to Dr Apaak, the regional centres are intended to reduce the cost, inconvenience and stress parents and candidates face when travelling to Accra to resolve placement-related issues.
Parents and candidates with genuine concerns have been advised to first contact Ghana Education Service (GES) or Ghana TVET Service offices in their respective regions.
