The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has described the Accra–Kumasi Expressway as a major legacy project that could define President John Dramani Mahama’s contribution to Ghana’s road infrastructure.
His comments come after engineers from the Ghana Armed Forces completed the clearing of the right-of-way along the entire expressway corridor, paving the way for the next stages of the project.
A Project for Future Generations
The Roads Minister described the expressway as a generational intervention, stressing that the project is intended to provide infrastructure that will benefit Ghanaians for decades to come.
«“Accra-Kumasi Expressway is our generational intervention. We are going to be 70 years. The President’s vision is that we should do something so that the generations ahead of us will say that when we were also here, we did something remarkable.”»
Mr Agbodza referenced major infrastructure projects undertaken under Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, including the Tema Motorway and the Tema Port, saying the current generation must also create projects that will leave a lasting mark on the country.
«“Dr Nkrumah and others did other things: they did the Tema Motorway, they did the port, and other things. We also must do something to hold our place in history on behalf of our people,” he said.»
The Minister said the completion of the right-of-way clearing represents an important milestone. The government is expected to proceed with the detailed design and procurement processes before actual construction of the expressway begins.
