Mayor of Accra Orders CBD Traders to Sweep Workspaces Hourly to Curb Sanitation Build-Up

Traders in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) must now sweep their immediate business surroundings every hour under a new directive issued by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey. The order aims to maintain environmental cleanliness across the capital and prevent quick trash accumulation between official clean-up days.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) confirmed the directive in a public statement on Monday, September 7. Mayor Allotey announced the regulation over the weekend while evaluating municipal compliance during the monthly National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise alongside the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.

The joint ministerial inspection team toured key commercial stretches, starting at the Kinbu Traffic Light and advancing through Tudu and neighboring thoroughfares.

While speaking directly to street vendors and store operators in Tudu, Allotey emphasized that maintaining public health standards requires continuous daily action from those operating in the capital’s busiest hubs.

“National Sanitation Day is a permanent initiative, but keeping Accra clean cannot be limited to just the first Saturday of every month,” Allotey stated, urging traders to take full ownership of their operating spaces.

Under the new guidelines, vendors must routinely clear litter and sweep nearby ground spaces throughout their operating hours. Municipal officials believe the hourly routine will stop bulk waste from piling up in dense retail zones, significantly improving overall sanitation across the metropolis.
