The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is set to begin replacing traditional static billboards with digital advertising boards from 2027 as part of a broader plan to modernise and bring order to outdoor advertising across the metropolis.
Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang announced the initiative during an engagement with 28 registered advertisers in the city.
According to the KMA, the Mayor said the current billboard system had become increasingly disorganised, with advertising structures of varying sizes being erected indiscriminately along major roads.
He noted that the situation was affecting the appearance of Kumasi and could, in some instances, create obstructions for motorists and pedestrians.
“For a city to thrive, there must be order,” he said.
New Rules for Billboard Placement
Under the planned policy, the Assembly intends to reduce the number of advertising boards across Kumasi while introducing stricter requirements governing their size, design and location.
KMA will determine how many billboards can be installed along specific stretches of road and establish separate standards for major traffic corridors and strategic locations.
The new guidelines will cover key areas including Airport Roundabout, Sofoline, Ahodwo and Bekwai Roundabout. Specific requirements will also apply to the Kumasi Zoo, Kejetia and the Central Business DistrictThe Mayor further announced that no new billboards would be allowed along the Ahodwo-Santasi stretch until the ongoing road dualisation project has been completed.
Old and Unpaid Structures to Be Removed
The Assembly is also set to remove over-aged and dilapidated billboards, as well as advertising structures associated with outstanding payments.
The move forms part of KMA’s efforts to create a more organised, modern and visually appealing outdoor advertising environment in Kumasi.
