Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has endorsed former General Secretary John Boadu to become the party’s next National Chairman.
Chairman Wontumi, who pulled out of the contest following his incarceration, has backed Mr Boadu as the candidate he believes can effectively lead the NPP’s rebuilding efforts and help the party regain power in 2028.
The endorsement was announced by the administrator of the Wontumi campaign, Dennis Okyere Danso, at a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Mr Danso said the decision was reached after consultations with Chairman Wontumi, party grassroots, constituency executives, campaign leaders, party elders and other stakeholders across the country.
He disclosed that the campaign leadership visited Mr Boasiako at the Nsawam facility, where he is currently being held, on Friday, September 4, before finalising its decision to support Mr Boadu.
“Following the meeting and after extensive consultation with the grassroots, constituency actors, campaign leadership, party elders and stakeholders across the country, the Wontumi campaign has taken a firm and decisive position to throw our full support, strength and political weight behind the candidature of Mr John Boadu for the National Chairman,” he said.
Mr Danso described the endorsement as a strategic move intended to strengthen the party’s organisational capacity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
He argued that Mr Boadu’s experience within the party and understanding of its structures, combined with the Wontumi campaign’s grassroots network, could provide the NPP with the organisational and mobilisation strength required for a comeback.
“John Boadu brings extensive institutional experience, deep knowledge of the party’s organisational structure, strong relationships across its ranks and proven records of frontline service,” Mr Danso said.
“When grassroots strength meets institutional experience, and mobilisation is matched with organisation, the NPP becomes a formidable force for victory.”
The Wontumi campaign believes Mr Boadu is the strongest candidate among those contesting the National Chairmanship and is best placed to lead the party’s return to power while supporting former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the presidency in 2028.
Chairman Wontumi announced his withdrawal from the NPP’s national elections on August 24, shortly after his campaign team had obtained nomination forms on his behalf.
In a statement issued on the same day, Mr Boasiako said the decision followed consultations with his family, legal team, party elders, campaign team and trusted supporters.
He is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted on illegal mining-related charges. His legal team has appealed the conviction and sentence.
Mr Boadu’s endorsement by the Wontumi camp comes weeks after a Global InfoAnalytics survey showed him leading the NPP National Chairmanship race.
The survey, published on August 20, indicated that 27% of NPP voters preferred Mr Boadu for the position, ahead of former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, who polled 15%, and Paul Afoko, who recorded 10%.
