Veteran highlife musician Barosky is back in Ghana after distressing footage of him in Manchester triggered a public outcry and prompted government intervention to secure his return.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed on Tuesday, September 8, that the musician had been safely repatriated to Ghana after Ghana’s High Commission in the United Kingdom stepped in following concerns over his welfare.
“I can confirm that we have repatriated Barosky and he is safely back with us in Ghana,” Mr Ablakwa said in a Facebook post.
The intervention followed a visit to Barosky in Manchester by Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK, Sabah Zita Benson, after the footage circulated widely on social media.
During the visit, the musician expressed his willingness to return home, leading to arrangements for his repatriation.
Mr Ablakwa said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs fully funded the process as part of its consular responsibilities.
He added that the government is also providing Barosky with psychosocial support and financial assistance to help him reintegrate into society.
The minister thanked members of the public who brought attention to the musician’s plight, particularly broadcaster Nana Romeo.
“We are most grateful to our fellow citizens, particularly Nana Romeo, for bringing Barosky’s heart-wrenching plight in Manchester to our attention,” he said.
Mr Ablakwa also commended Ghana’s High Commission in the UK for its role in engaging the musician and coordinating his safe return to Ghana.
