Motsepe Rules Out Plan B for 2027 AFCON as Tanzania Retains Co-Host Status

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has ruled out replacing Tanzania as one of the co-hosts of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Motsepe said CAF remains committed to ensuring that Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda are fully prepared to host the continental tournament next year.

His comments come amid concerns over Tanzania’s readiness and preparations for the competition. However, the CAF president said the outstanding issues would be addressed before the tournament begins.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, September 17, Motsepe said CAF would not consider an alternative hosting arrangement for Tanzania.

“There will not be a plan B; there will not be a stage where there will be a perception that Tanzania is irrevocably behind,” he said.

He attributed the position to CAF’s commitment to resolving areas where preparations are lagging.

“The deep commitment amongst us to fix those areas where we are behind. This is a moment of pride for our people and our continent. We have to believe in ourselves,” Motsepe added.

He further said doubts about Tanzania’s ability to deliver the tournament could undermine confidence in Africa’s capacity to host a world-class continental competition.

“If the starting point is that Tanzania will not be ready, then you are saying we as Africans don’t have the capability and ability to be on time with integrity and host a world-class AFCON, and I’m deeply committed,” he said.

The 2027 AFCON will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, marking the first time the tournament will be staged across the three East African countries.
