Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, says he is confident the party can return to government in 2028 if it succeeds in resolving its internal divisions and rebuilding its structures.
Mr Afoko made the comments while engaging delegates in the Western, Central and Eastern Regions as part of his campaign for the NPP National Chairman position.
He said his priority would be to unite the party and strengthen its grassroots structures, arguing that the NPP could spend only two years in opposition if members closed ranks and worked together.
«“I do not have a magic wand, but I can assure you that if we close our ranks and rally behind me to become the National Chairman, we have only two years to stay in opposition, and then power will be ours,” he told constituency executives.»
Mr Afoko said unity would be at the centre of his 3Rs Campaign Blueprint; Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power.
He argued that the party has the necessary structures and resources to mount a strong campaign but needs to address internal disagreements that have affected its organisation.
“We have all the ingredients for victory. What we lack is unity. My message to every constituency, every region, is simple: set aside our differences, reunite as one family, and rebuild the structures that have made us formidable in the past,” he said.
As part of his proposed reforms, Mr Afoko said he would focus on strengthening grassroots structures, improving constituency and polling-station organisation, and restoring confidence among supporters.
He said the reforms would be aimed at improving the party’s internal organisation and preparing it for the 2028 general election.
The NPP is scheduled to elect its National Chairman on October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, with Mr Afoko continuing his engagements with delegates ahead of the contest.
