President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to use Ghana’s expected chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027 to advance continental integration, accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and promote peace and security across Africa.
He said Ghana would also seek to strengthen Africa’s collective voice on the international stage by encouraging greater unity among member states on issues of common interest.
Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, September 24, President Mahama said Ghana intended to use its leadership of the continental body to pursue priorities that would advance Africa’s economic and political interests.
He identified continental integration as a key priority, noting that deeper cooperation among African countries could strengthen the continent’s capacity to pursue shared development objectives.
The President also highlighted the importance of fully implementing the AfCFTA, which seeks to expand intra-African trade and deepen economic cooperation among countries on the continent.
Beyond economic integration, President Mahama said Ghana would place peace and security high on its agenda, particularly efforts to address conflicts in different parts of Africa.
“In January 2027, Ghana will probably assume the chairmanship of the African Union. I wish to serve notice that we intend to use our AU chairmanship to champion continental integration, accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, push for peace and security in all the conflict zones of Africa and ensure that Africa speaks on the global stage with one resolute, undivided and confident voice,” he said.
The President’s proposed agenda would therefore combine economic integration, conflict resolution and stronger continental coordination as Ghana prepares for its anticipated role at the helm of the AU in 2027.
