Lawyer for Salomey Awity Baffoe, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, says the defence will appeal the High Court’s decision to deny the senior nursing officer bail.
The Accra High Court rejected Ms Baffoe’s bail application in a case involving an allegation of abetment of crime linked to content attributed to the “Ghana Jollof” social media account.
The court cited the ongoing nature of investigations and concerns that evidence could be deleted if Ms Baffoe were released on bail.
Speaking after a virtual hearing on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Mr Awuah said Ms Baffoe’s family had instructed the defence to pursue every lawful avenue to secure her release.
“As counsel, we have been instructed by her family to proceed to ensure that the liberty of the mother of three minor children is secured,” he said.
“We are proceeding by filing an appeal against the decision of the High Court.”
Defence seeks Court of Appeal hearing during vacation
Mr Awuah said the defence would also petition the Chief Justice to allow the Court of Appeal to sit during the judicial vacation to consider the matter.
“We are also going to petition the Lord Chief Justice that, just as in exceptional or very exceptional circumstances, it allowed the Supreme Court to even sit during vacation once it concerns the liberty of a person,” he said.
“We are petitioning the Chief Justice to let the Court of Appeal sit so that following the appeal, we can also bring an application before the Appellate Court.”
The lawyer said the defence would seek an expedited hearing once the record of proceedings is transmitted to the Court of Appeal.
“Where necessary, particularly where the record has been transmitted, we are going to make sure it is expedited because it’s not a voluminous record,” he added.
Lawyer raises concern over children
Mr Awuah also expressed concern about the effect of Ms Baffoe’s continued detention on her three minor children.
According to him, the children have been asking about their mother’s whereabouts, with the situation having a particularly significant impact on her 15-year-old child.
The defence is therefore seeking to have the bail decision reviewed through the appellate process while the underlying investigations continue.
