Agbodza Urges Contractors to Accelerate Work on Accra-Kumasi Bypass

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has urged contractors working on the Accra-Kumasi Bypass to intensify their efforts to ensure the project is completed on schedule.

Mr Agbodza said the Konongo section remains one of the most challenging portions of the bypass because of the congestion it causes on the existing carriageway.

He noted that the section has been a major concern for stakeholders in the Ashanti Region, who have repeatedly called for its speedy completion.

The Minister made the remarks on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during an inspection of the Accra-Kumasi Bypass.

He commended contractors who had remobilised to their sites and resumed construction after periods of inactivity, while observing that some contractors were progressing faster than others.

Mr Agbodza expressed confidence that all contractors working on the various sections of the bypass could complete their respective projects by the end of 2027.

He, however, urged contractors whose work was progressing slowly to increase their pace and make maximum use of the available resources.

“One of the most challenging lots on the bypasses is Konongo, because of the congestion it creates using the existing carriageway. So the biggest concern of our people in the Ashanti Region about this road is particularly about the Konongo bypass,” he said.

The Minister recalled that several contractors had not been active on the project before 2024 but said the government had since been working with them and the Ghana Highway Authority to get construction activities back on track.

He specifically commended Kofi Job and other contractors who had returned to their sites and resumed work.

“We have very high confidence in all the contractors working on the bypass project to be able to complete it by the end of 2027,” Mr Agbodza said.

He acknowledged that the terrain and conditions may differ across the various project lots but urged all contractors to maintain a strong pace of work.

Konongo section targeted for early completion

Mr Agbodza said the immediate priority was to make the Konongo section motorable as soon as possible, particularly by completing key structures before Christmas.

“We must necessarily complete this section or at least make it motorable within the shortest possible time,” he said.

According to him, completing the structures before Christmas would provide motorists with an alternative route, even if some sections remain dusty during the initial stages.

The Minister said the government was encouraged by the progress made so far and would continue to engage contractors to ensure work on the bypass advances toward completion.
